Katie’s Notebook: February 21, 2024

It’s only Tuesday but the announcement that Jill Biden is putting $100 million behind women’s health research and development has made my week. My dad always said that if I wanted to know what organizations cared about then I should follow the money. I’ve loved seeing how in the last few months the White House put out the announcement to boost federal government research in women’s health and followed that up with a nice fat check. HOORAY!

I’m a bit delayed in this Notebook issue because I have been working on a variety of fun projects! I am currently writing a piece on how startups and Academic Medical Centers can work better together as well as one exploring how big tech is approaching women’s health. Coming to an inbox near you soon! I’ve also had fun helping an early-stage health equity-focused company prep for fundraising and position their brand in the market.

Here are my 5 shares for the issue:

  1. RH Capital Invests In 90% Women, BIPOC Founders In Women’s Health (Forbes) In 2022, the company closed its second fund, bringing total assets under management to $43.5 million 💵 . Take a look at all the awesome women’s health companies RH Capital has funded.

  2. I’m planning to make a huge batch of these chicken enchiladas 👩‍🍳 this weekend, which freeze like a dream and make a great meal train gift!

  3. The sky is the limit when it comes to using menstrual blood for biomarkers. The FDA just approved the Q-vin pad for Ac1 measurement 🩸 for diabetic patients. It looks like the company has a full pipeline of other biomarkers in the future! 👀

  4. Abortion pills offered via telehealth as safe as in-person medication abortions, study finds 💊 (STAT News) Researchers looked at 6,000 cases and found that 97.7% of patients had complete abortions. “In 2.3% of cases the initial course of abortion pills was insufficient and patients needed further doses of medication or evacuation procedures that were not considered emergencies.” This is great news as states continue to restrict abortion access. Also… just gonna leave this here… you can get Plan B with a quick conversation with a pharmacist and let it sit on your shelf just in in case. (THIS IS NOT THE ABORTION PILL.) You can also get abortion pills to have on hand from places like Wisp and Hey Jane if you fear legislation potentially limiting options you might need. Do with that information what you will.

  5. I just bought these joggers and this matching hoodie in Heather Green and I wore them three times in the first week. My neighbor confused them with Vuori pants and they are a fraction of the cost. After washing they still look great. This set is my new favorite athleisure. Email me if you want $20 off your first order with a referral code.

That’s a wrap. See you in your inbox in a few weeks.
