Spilling the Tea on My Favorite Natural Deodorant

Have you considered using a natural deodorant? With so many options on the market, I decided to revamp my underarm routine with a cleaner, aluminum free option. I spent way too much money and time trying out products I found in the aisles of Target and Whole Foods and I am here to lead you right to the holy grail! Come along on my journey and learn about my favorite deodorant.

Why I started looking into natural deodorants / non antiperspirants:

  • There is mixed evidence about aluminum in antiperspirants being linked to increased risk of breast cancer. However, I have a family history of breast cancer so I figured any small changes that I could make to reduce that risk were worth exploring.

  • I felt like most antiperspirant + deodorants had really fake scents. Who wants to smell like plumeria mixed with baby powder? Or a strange summer salad like Cucumber Melon? (I don’t want to embody a 2000s high school locker room.) I also felt like the scents were overpowering and if I wanted to wear perfume or scented lotion the fragrances were fighting with each other.

  • Antiperspirant + deodorant may stop sweat but I thought they made me actually smell worse. It was like the clogging of the pores from the antiperspirant made me smell and then the deodorant element covered the body odor smell with a fragrance. I thought the final result was unpleasant and honestly worse than if I wore nothing.

What is my favorite natural deodorant?

Hands down, it is Necessarie: The Deodorant Gel (both the unscented and eucalyptus.) I’ll spare you the reviews of all of the sub par products and jump into why I think Necessarie is amazing.

What makes Necessarie a winner over the other drugstore options?

I tried 5-6 sticks I picked up in big box stores. Most of those options contain a combo of coconut oil or shea butter plus some kind of starch like tapioca or arrowroot powder. They were all pretty thick when applying and I didn’t love the feel or the scent options.

Necessarie is special because their active ingredient is alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) which combat odor by lowering the pH on the skin and making it less hospitable for odor-generating bacteria. You are actually addressing the problem instead of covering it up! It can also fade hyperpigmentation if that’s an issue for you.

Additionally, I haven’t noticed any staining of my clothes like I did with other products, particularly those containing aluminum. Win!

Does it Work?

YES! I have next to no underarm odor when I use the Necessarie deodorant. It is NOT an antiperspirant, so you will still sweat when you wear it.

Spilling the Tea: My tips and tricks for using natural deodorant:

  • If you are just getting started with natural deodorants, it can take your body some time to adjust to it. I found that I had to sweat out all of the aluminum and old fragrance that is in the skin for up to a week before the natural deodorant started doing its job well. You can speed up this process by working out and getting a good sweat going on!

  • The liquid/ gel formula takes around 2 minutes to dry so plan accordingly when it comes to getting dressed!

  • I love both the eucalyptus and unscented options. The eucalyptus smells fresh when you put it on but fades within the hour and is not overpowering. It looks like the unscented is currently out of stock but the comments are demanding for them to make more!

  • A container lasts forever. I get about 6-9 months out of a single one!

  • Necessarie is a mindful company — it’s certified climate neutral, plastic neutral, vegan, cruelty free and a B-corp. I love supporting companies in line with my values!
