Katie’s Notebook: January 10, 2024

Happy New Year! I’m not one for resolutions. I think you can reinvent or reprioritize any time and any day. So while I haven’t written down any life altering changes that I’ll beat myself up over if I don’t achieve them, I have decided to be more intentional about the relationships in my life and the type of work I do. When I started my company in 2020 my mantra was “Impact over Hours” which was in response to leaving a job full of large organization time sucks and focusing on every hour I spent with clients being a value-add. I still like that mantra, but I am working on redefining impact, and it not just being at a client level, but an ecosystem level. How am I moving the needle in knowledge, evidence, and product quality in the world of digital health and women’s health innovation? Are you doing your own soul searching now? I’d love to hear what you are noodling on.

Without further adieu…here are my five shares for this issue of Katie’s Notebook:

  1. AI Failed The Assignment: I just read that ChatGPT incorrectly diagnosed more than 8 in 10 pediatric case studies. In this study, 100 case challenges were entered into ChatGPT and it was asked to list differential diagnoses. You can probably glean from the article title that the chatbot failed. On one hand — doctors aren’t going to be replaced by AI any time soon, phew. On the other hand — this just goes to show that we have a while for the hype of AI to catch up to realistic and functional tools in healthcare.

  2. Rock Health Insights Are The Best: ICYMI digital health people: Rock Health dropped Digital health at the turn of 2024: Tracking developments along the innovation maturity curve. It’s a stellar 5 minute read on what’s trending in health tech. As a public health professional, I’m following what’s happening in ‘food as medicine’ because #SDOH.

  3. Books I’ve Read Recently: I got on the Fourth Wing hype train in December and blew through the first book right before Christmas and then spent the time between Christmas and New Years reading Iron Flame. I am not a huge fantasy reader but this Harry Potter + Hunger Games + Game of Thrones series sucked me in. Last night I finished The Last Devil to Die, a Thursday Murder Club book. I’d describe the series as cozy mysteries with dynamic characters that form unlikely friendships in their 70s and solve crimes. I recommend any of these books to keep you company during the dark days of winter.

  4. Funding for my Women’s Health friends: Office on Women’s Health has opening funding opportunities; FemHealth Ventures closed a $32 million round so you might want to knock on that door; 2024 research award applications are open at the Foundation for Women’s Wellness.

  5. I’m becoming a multiples person: The older I get, the more I buy duplicates of clothing items I love. I just ordered a second Cotton Mockneck Sweater in cappuccino from Quince once I realized that I was always looking for my charcoal one in my drawer. It works so well with jeans, skirts, and washes beautifully.

Wishing you a healthy and productive 2024,

Katie
