Katie’s Notebook: September 26, 2024
Hello!
How is it the end of September already? I’m writing this in my favorite gray sweatshirt and…shorts…because it’s still warm around here. Who else is ready for fire pit time, s’mores and apple cider donuts?
In this issue I’m covering a variety of women’s health topics, resources to compare Trump and Harris’s healthcare positions, and some baller female founders. Don’t forget to scroll for my latest articles published in Digital Health Insights and some of my favorite fall finds.
Let’s Dig In.
This week the DOD committed $500 million to women’s health research. (If that number sounds familiar, it’s the same amount set aside for ARPA-H Women’s Health Sprint — winners still to be announced.)
The article I wish I’d written: This piece by Hannah Wrathall and Elena Mills is a great intro to understanding clinical research and using that knowledge to make sense of flashy headlines, particularly related to healthcare news. Whenever I see a study being reported on by major media outlets, I always go to the source — the peer reviewed journal article — and look at sample size, study design, participant population, statistical methods applied, findings, and the ever-important limitations and discussion sections. Also — who has funded the study? Is it funded by the NIH or a company with skin the in game? Check the article out if you want a crash course on good versus bad science.
Wisp has served 1 million patients with reproductive health services: Congrats to Wisp for reaching this milestone! I met Monica Cepak, CEO of Wisp at the Digital Medicine Conference when I moderated the women’s health panel and was so inspired by her mission to provide comprehensive women’s health support, no matter where women are to get them back to their normal lives faster. Read her interview with FemTech Insider.
I liked this piece by KFF on where Trump and Harris stand on healthcare. DHI also released an article digging into different House and Senate races and what they could mean for national healthcare policy.

My Latest Content
On September 12 Digital Health Insights published, “These innovative digital health startups are addressing the pediatric mental health crisis,” a piece I wrote on how tech health companies are exploring creative solutions to address learning challenges, depression and anxiety, autism, and wellbeing for kids. This week I featured a midwife that is building a new sexual and reproductive health chatbot with empathy and evidence. You can find the chatbot here.
Fun Finds
I started pulling out my fall clothes I realized a few things needed replacing. Over the weekend I did a little shopping and found some great items on sale, like this top that will be perfect with leggings and chasing the kids, this shirt that I already imagine with a vest, jeans and booties at a fall festival, and I’ll be packing this quintessential mountain top for a weekend getaway. I love the J.Crew factory corduroy pants which run true to size and wash so well! (I have them in green and rust.) This cozy blanket has become a family favorite. I sat under it reading A Discovery of Witches over the weekend which is a perfect fall read! (History + magic + love story = chef’s kiss.)
