Katie’s Notebook: September 12, 2024

Hello Friend,

With the change of the season, I am revamping my newsletter a little bit. I will still focus on sharing content I find interesting and relevant, full of professional value and cocktail party conversation starters. I’m committing to including funding opportunities for early stage digital health companies and female founders moving forward. I started writing for CHIME Digital Health Insights and have added a section to share those articles. My first piece is about Google’s AI Overviews and the role that they could play in health literacy. Finally, I’ve added a Fun Finds section at the bottom for books and clothing recommendations. As always, I write this newsletter to stay engaged with a community of like-minded people. Feel free to send along ideas you want explored in either this venue or Digital Health Insights.

Let’s dig in.

  • Springboard Enterprises announced the new female founders in their Healthcare and Technology Innovation program. So many interesting companies and I am particularly intrigued by the number of healthcare at home companies that show up across diagnostics and medical equipment. Have a look!

  • The Women’s Health Research Tracker, a collaboration between FemTech Insider and Proem, is all I ever wanted! Per the announcement, “The tool will provide concise, accessible summaries of the latest studies, making it easier for researchers, healthcare professionals, and the general public to stay informed about advancements in women’s health. “

  • Having a delicious ready-to-eat breakfast makes mornings so much nicer in my house. I recently made this pumpkin baked oatmeal (with chocolate chips, obviously) and it was great warm or cold. I also appreciated that the recipe called for an 8x8 pan so I didn’t get tired of it before it was gone. Next on my list are these Morning Cookies.

  • This NY Times article about the team that fixes everything from bent wheelchairs to prosthetic limbs for Paralympians had me in tears. It reminded me of the good in humanity.

  • Funding opportunities: VentureWell’s E-Team program has up to $25,000 in available funds per student team. NIH Women’s Health Funding has lots of open streams. The UNICEF Venture Fund is looking to invest in Open Source frontier technology solutions that have the potential to create radical change in children’s health, nutrition, and mental health (up to $100,000 in equity free funding.) 25 other business grants for female founders.

My Latest Content

I am trilled to be a contributing writer for CHIME’s Digital Health Insights publication. My first article is live: Are Google AI overviews helping or hindering consumer health education? Google's new AI Overview feature aims to simplify health searches, but questions remain about its accuracy and impact on health education. Enjoy!

Fun Finds

I’ve been loyal to these L.L. Bean slippers for decades (a pair lasts me about 3 years and I wear them all the time!) I am due for a fresh pair and I am thinking about changing it up with this new style. This blanket has been all over my social media feeds and I gave in and bought one. I’m here to report that is actually the coziest blanket. It would make a great gift if you have also started on your holiday shopping. I just bought a duplicate of my favorite chambray shirt and am ready for the temps to drop so I can wear it weekly.

Note: As a solopreneur I use affiliate links for some of the products I believe in as a means of diversifying my income. When you buy something I have linked to, I may receive a small commission from that company at no cost to you.
